Do you struggle to showcase your own style within your home? There’s nothing worse than feeling uninspired by the space you live in, so if you feel your home is lacking that personal touch, keep reading for some tips!

Tips for creating personal style

Interior decorators usually have a solid sense of what they like and don’t like, because they’re always critiquing and evaluating room interiors whether in people’s homes, magazines or online photos. You too can develop your own personal style by viewing different kinds of interiors and deciding what you like and don’t like about them.

Find photos of rooms you like and collect them on a Pinterest board or in a folder. There’s no ‘right’ answer, it’s simply an exercise for you to become more aware of your own personal tastes, and these will become apparent over time the more photos you collect and notes you take.

The overriding idea isn’t to copy a room down to the last detail in a photo but to cull elements you like from various sources, and create your own interior design in a space. You might find you like both antique and modern styles, and so look at ways you can blend these together to give a frumpy interior a lift.

Another good way to develop your own style is to use your personal belongings in a creative, thought provoking way within a space. Antiques, curios, mementos, maps, photos, if you have a collection of items hidden away in a drawer, think about how you can display them in a way that’s visually appealing. There are also lots of places online you can buy affordable art that takes your fancy.

If you have personal items or art on display but they’re not really saying anything about who you are, then you may have too many. Remove anything you don’t love or that doesn’t really have any significance or importance to you.
