When your roof is full of mold, you can’t be comfortable to stay in your home. What might look like an external problem could already be inside the ceilings. Mold is associated with moisture and can lead to fungal and bacterial infections if not treated in its early stages.

Mold is particularly common, especially on rooftops that are near tall trees. Apart from leaves and debris falling on the roof, mold also forms due to the moist conditions throughout the year. The worst thing about mold is that it can shorten the lifespan of your roof shingles or tiles. If you're struggling with mold at your property fear not! The team at Bricks+Agent have pulled together the following steps to help you remove mold from your roof once and for all.

STEP 1 - Consider protecting your plants and soil

When you plan to remove mold from your roof, keep in mind that you are going to use chemicals which might spread in your garden. If harmful chemicals such as bleach were to come in contact with plants and/or vegetable gardens, it won’t be safe for you to consume the food. Ensure you protect them by splashing the plants that are close to your house with water. That will protect them from the bleach solution that you are going to use on the roof.

STEP 2 - Apply bleach solution to the roof

Before applying any bleach solution on top of your roof, its important that you wear a protective mask on your nose and gloves. Bleach fumes can be harmful if you inhale them or when they get in contact with your skin.

Take a 4 litre bucket and add 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach and 3/4 cup of water. You can also add a spoon of trisodium phosphate and mix them. Put the solution in a pump sprayer and use it to spray your roof shingles or tiles.

STEP 3 - Let the solution soak and rinse it

After spraying the rooftop, let the shingles or tiles soak for 15 minutes before cleaning. Rinse it thoroughly but ensure that the pressure is low. You should rinse the rooftop starting from the peak of the roof and make your way down. This will reduce the chance of water seeping. You can confirm if there is any mold left by running your hand over the shingles or tiles. If there is, you will notice a slimy texture. In case you feel any, apply the de-molding agent once more and let it soak for 10 minutes before rinsing it again.

STEP 4 - Allow the roof to dry

You need to let the roof dry thoroughly after the cleaning process. Even if you notice that the roof is still slimy after cleaning it, let it dry first before repeating the cleaning process.

If you are cleaning asphalt roofs, you may not want to use chlorine because it has a high content of sodium and it can damage the material. Use other alternatives such as sodium hydroxide or lye. Not a fan of chemicals? There are many different products free of bleach, and you can make an informed decision when buying them.
