Living in a messy home can feel dirty, but it can also have effect our moods and overall well being. That's why living an organised life, with less belongings around you is attractive and necessary. Owning fewer possessions will allow you to clean less whilst keeping you more organised.

While decluttering a house seems like a great idea, the question of where to begin is is something that often causing people to never start. YMaybe you feel anxious and overwhelmed about it, especially if you are a busy person. Decluttering your home does not have to be stressful. The team at Bricks+Agent have pulled together top tips, so you can get started anytime.

1. Create a schedule

Before re-arranging anything in your home, work out how and when you would like to do a specific task by creating a schedule. You might want to set two hours per day to do something on the schedule. For example, you might start with sorting through your clothes. Simply allocate a particular day to do this. You can schedule another day to sort out kitchen items that are no longer in use and allocate a separate day to organise items in storage for example.

2. Clear the rooms

If you decide to start with a particular room e.g. a kitchen, a bedroom or a living room, ensure that you get everything out. You can place them in the yard. You might need to hire a professional to help you move heavy stuff. From there, you can start checking essential and less critical items among your things.

3. Sort through belongings

Start with your bedroom and sort out your clothes cabinet. Find out what you don’t need. Use industrial sized garbage bags to use as a trash can where you can put items that broken or can be donated to charity shops.

4. Categorise your belongings

After sorting through your household items and identifying what you don't need, its time to get more organised. You don’t want to spend an hour looking for a pair of slippers or socks, so you might want to keep all essentials within reach. Map out a smart place to store household items.

You can place clothes in one place. Among the clothes, separate the socks, underwear and even jackets so that you can know where to find them when needed. Same applies to kitchen appliances, detergents, books and bathroom items.

5. Donate useful appliances, clothes and furniture

When sorting through your belongings, you may realise there are some items that you don’t use, but are in excellent condition. This happens mostly with clothes and bedding items. Remember, the aim is to declutter y our home. Consider donating it to friends, family members or charity organisations.

6. Sell unwanted items

Did you know that you can also sell pre-loved items that you are no longer using? You can sell them online or offline. Create an online store such as eBay and market them there. List the items with pictures and other vital details. You may be able to sell them at a lower price since they are second-hand items.

Every home is different. You know what you have in your house and what you need most. Whether you choose to sell and donate items or hold onto them, the most important thing is to stay organised. If you have a lot of stuff that are still in use and you feel they are taking too much space in your home, you might want to consider hiring storage space to keep them organised and out of the home.
