Cleaning Timber Benchtops

Wooden counters look beautiful but when it comes to cleaning timber benchtops, they can be high maintenance. Basic spills, including water, should be cleaned up straight away to avoid staining using a detergent surface spray or warm soapy water.

Avoid the use of any acid based cleaning products, the acid will eat through the glue holding the benchtop together. Regular oiling will keep wooden benchtops looking their best, and an annual reseal is recommended to decrease the buildup of bacteria.

Cleaning Marble Benchtops

Marble is a popular choice for a kitchen benchtop because it looks sophisticated and comes in a wide range of colours and styles. However, marble is also prone to scratching and staining. To keep your marble benchtop in tiptop shape, clean it daily with warm water and a damp microfibre cloth. Use a ‘safe for marble’ benchtop cleaner to spot clean any marks or spills. Rinse with clean water.

If spills occur, wipe up immediately, especially alcohol or fruit juice - acidic liquids will leave an indelible stain. Prepare ingredients for cooking on chopping boards rather than directly on the stone as knife marks will etch the surface.

Cleaning Laminate Benchtops

The cheapest and easiest of benchtops to clean, laminate responds well to general household cleaning sprays or soapy water to remove dirt, grease and spills. Dry using a clean cloth to remove excess water. Avoid scourers and abrasives, however, as they will damage the surface.

Always use chopping boards to prepare food and don’t cut directly onto the bench, or place hot objects onto the surface as it will mark.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Benchtops

Stainless steel benchtops are strong, durable, non porous and easy to clean and disinfect. Avoid cutting food items directly on the benchtop as stainless steel is prone to dents and scratches.

You can simply use a dishcloth, detergent, and warm water to clean the surface. For a deep clean, sprinkle baking soda, add vinegar and scrub the benchtop gently in the direction of the grain. Rinse clean with water and dry the benchtop using a paper towel or microfibre cloth. Add a small amount of olive oil to a paper towel and apply in the direction of the grain. Buff away excess with the dry side of the towel to make your benchtop shine!
