A safe water supply in your home is essential. We need water for drinking, bathing, washing dishes, and many other hygiene purposes. But if something goes wrong with your water supply, a plumber can speedily fix the problem. Here are 6 warning signs if you’re unsure of when to call a plumber.

1. Noisy Toilet

A randomly running toilet that fills its tank constantly even though no one has used it is a cause for concern. You might just dismiss it as a noisy toilet but that noisy toilet is wasting gallons of water and costing you in excess water bills. A plumber can easily detect what the problem is and fix this issue.

2. Knocking Pipes

If you hear a knocking in your pipes whenever the bath or kitchen sink is filling or the shower’s running, it’s an issue that shouldn’t be ignored. When pipes start knocking it could be to do with too much pressure or loose valves, either way, you want to get this fixed as soon as possible to avoid leaks.

3. Leaky Pipes

Speaking of leaks, pipes that keep dripping need to be seen to as, if ignored, it can mean breakages or bursting. Gushing leaks and broken pipes are plumbing issues that no homeowner or landlord wants to deal with, so small leaks should be attended to before they turn into something worse.

4. Slow draining

A slow draining sink or shower is annoying but small blockages can often be fixed by DIY methods . But if it’s always happening, or it’s more than one drain, then it could mean a serious underlying problem with your plumbing. A plumber can get to the root of the problem with professional tools that pinpoint any significant plumbing issues.

5. No hot water

A small hot water tank means short showers, but getting no hot water at all is a different story. The first thing to do is check the taps in other areas of the home, if you’re not getting hot water there either, then it’s a water heater issue. If those are fine, then it’s likely an issue with your shower unit. In either case, a plumber will need to repair a faulty component or thermostat.

6. Coloured water

Lastly, one of the sure signs you need a plumber is coloured water coming out of your taps. Often if work has been done out in the street and the mains have been turned off water can be white or cloudy because of air in the pipes but this should run clear after a while. Other colours, such as brown, red or yellow indicate rust in your pipes if they’re old. Green or blue water means corroded copper plumbing. Any colours other than clear, white or cloudy means a bigger problem and you should call a plumber asap.

Unfortunately, serious plumbing issues can’t be remedied by a DIY solution, so if you need help from a local professional then jump on the Bricks+Agent homeowners hub and post a job. It’s quick, easy and free!
