6 Places In The Home You Should Install Power Points

People of yesteryear weren’t as reliant on electrical appliances and technology as we are today. Older homes have a distinct lack of power points in places like the bathroom and kitchen which can be an inconvenience. So if you’re building or rewiring a home, then installing power points in all the right places is a necessity. It’s safer than using extension leads or double adapters on all your single plugs, not to mention less frustrating. It’s not difficult to figure out where to put power points if you give it some proper thought, here are 6 essential places you should install power points.

1. Bathroom

Bathroom power points should be able to handle all the necessary grooming tools - hair straighteners, hair dryers, electric razors etc. Take stock of how many appliances will be used in the bathroom and how frequently.

Power points beside the bathroom vanity are handy but slightly above the sink in case of water spillage. Consider placing power points inside a bathroom cabinet for charging appliances if you want an uncluttered appearance.

2. Bedroom

Bedrooms are power hungry havens for electrical devices that need charging - iPads, Smartphones, laptops - then there’s bedside lamps and clocks and TVs...the list goes on.

Installing a number of power points beside the bed is the most convenient place to recharge, but if you don’t want a lot of unsightly plugs, consider installing USB sockets directly into the wall. Don’t forget power points for vacuum cleaning too, install at least one double socket in the each corner of the room.

3. Kitchen

For the kitchen it’s safe to say the more power points the better. Think about all the major appliances you use in the kitchen and then add one or two more power points. Then there’s small appliances, such as the toaster, blender, kettle etc. which can be in use simultaneously and need separate power points on the bench.

Island benches are a handy item on which to install a few extra power points for the mixer or blender and the other power points in the kitchen are being used.

4. Living Room

The living room is for relaxing and entertainment, and with TVs, DVD players, game consoles, etc. the more power points the better. People will also chill out in the living room, so being able to charge a device for surfing the net or reading is handy. Lighting is also a consideration, so you’ll need power points for floor lamps, and one more for occasional usage such as the vacuum cleaner - installing double power points will minimise the space taken up.

Beside or behind the couch are the best locations for power points for lamps, phone chargers etc. For TV, DVD player, game consoles, etc, behind the TV cabinet/stand.

4. Home office

A spare room for a study or office is a common addition to homes these days but to make it viable you’ll need to upgrade your power points. The computer, printer, Smartphone and scanner will all be needing juice. Here’s one place you should consider putting power points just above desk height so it’s easier to plug and unplug portable devices.

5. On the deck

Don’t fall into the trap of running an extension cord to your kitchen just to power up your fairy lights, or outdoor heater. Be sure to think about what you might need to plug in outside in your entertainment area. A power point or two won’t go astray out here, even if it’s just for a bug zapper.
